The quiet hill station of Kotagiri (also referred to as “Switzerland of the East”, is situated in
the Nilgiris, "the Blue Mountains" of southern India in the state of Tamil Nadu, about 6,000
feet above sea level. The town is surrounded by waterfalls, rivulets and lush green forests.
Adventure Sports, Trekking, Rock Climbing etc. are all activities that Kotagiri offers the
traveler. You may also want to simply sit back and enjoy the breathtaking views of the
surrounding hills, clear streams, rolling clouds and valleys surrounded by mist. The region
abounds in lush green tea estates, charming British Era buildings and pristine Reserve forests
rich in flaura and fauna.
Kotagiri was previously known as Kota-keri, "the home of the Kota tribes". Some regions of
Kotagiri are still inhibited by members of this tribe who make a living as artisans. Nowadays
though, members of the Badaga community are settled in Kotagiri in large numbers and are
involved in all kinds of professions. A lot of Badaga villages are dotted all over the hills and
valleys around Kotagiri.
Kotagiri is located about 27 km east of Ooty and 23 km northeast of Coonoor. It is one of the
oldest hill stations in the Nilgiris. Kotagiri has a more favourable climate and milder
temperatures when compared to Ooty because it is protected by the Dodabetta mountain
ranges from the harsh southwest monsoons. On the whole, Kotagiri is a hill station that still
retains its old world charm, yet close and easily accessible from Ooty and Coonoor and
Mettupalayam in the foot of the hills.
